Process black-and-white negatives

Invert black-and-white negatives in a B&W project, then adjust grayscale and framing. There is no need to demask them as color film and remove saturation afterward.

Before you start

Have your B&W negative files ready and check capture quality and the analysis area.

Steps

  1. Create a B&W project and check Invert

Choose B&W under Film Type, use New Roll Project, and wait for source preparation. Check Invert in the Contact Sheet’s top toolbar. The absence of color CCM and color-algorithm selection is expected; do not create a color project just to find Curve or dmin+dmax. A negative with Invert off is normal, not damaged data.

  2. Check analysis before grayscale edits and framing

Open a frame, use Calibration Area in the Viewer toolbar to exclude holes, light-source areas, and anomalies, choose Apply, and wait. Adjust Offset, Gain, Shadows, and Highlights in Density as needed, then inspect Contrast and curves. Missing color white balance, CMY, and saturation controls is expected for B&W. Finish composition in Crop and click Done. Analysis and output framing are different operations.

  3. Choose the view and output use

Technical views such as Log can have intentionally different contrast from display-ready images. Save the project, export for the intended use, and open an output file to inspect grayscale and framing.

Check the result

The photograph is positive, with suitable grayscale and framing. Open an export and check that tonal detail is retained.

Common issues

  • A flat appearance in a technical view warrants checking View before declaring B&W conversion a failure.
