Use a chart reference within a roll

A chart photographed on the film can help guide conversion of the roll. Mark the chart frame, then check that the patches are correctly identified.

In-roll chart reference versus device CCM

A suitable chart photographed on the film gives the app known patches to help estimate the roll’s response, rather than relying entirely on ordinary photographs. Mark the chart frame, then check its orientation and sample boxes. This provides a reference for the film’s response; device CCM calibrates the camera and light. They serve different purposes.

Before you start

You need a chart photographed on this roll of film. This is separate from the transmission chart used to make a device CCM.

Steps

  1. Mark the chart frame

Find the chart photograph in the Contact Sheet, right-click it and choose Color chart in this frame, then use the Color Chart method. The app does not automatically search every unmarked ordinary photograph for charts.

Right-click the chart photograph: Color chart in this frame marks it; Align color chart in Viewer enters manual alignment. These are different actions.Select image to enlarge
  2. Align manually if detection fails

Color chart not detected does not mean the roll’s files are damaged. Check the marked frame, then use Align manually in Viewer or Align color chart in Viewer from its context menu.

  3. Click the four corners in the illustrated order

Read the upper-right diagram and frame the patch array, excluding its case and keeping it inside Calibration Area. Click in order: 1, the white-end corner of the gray row, usually dark brown in a negative; 2, follow that row to its black-end corner, usually light brown; 3, the opposite black-end corner; 4, the remaining white-end corner. These are array corners, not four arbitrary patch centers. The brightest negative area is not the white end. Use this chart is unavailable until placement is complete. Cancel/Esc and reopen if the direction was wrong.

  4. Adjust the sample boxes and confirm

Drag the numbered handles until every sample box sits inside its patch, clear of borders and reflections. Hold Space and drag to pan if needed. Click Use this chart, wait for roll analysis, then inspect several ordinary photographs. Choose Use automatic detection to return to automatic alignment. If the sample boxes are misplaced, realign the chart first.

Check the result

The chart frame is marked and the sample boxes sit inside the correct patches. Once analysis finishes, check color and tone in several frames from the roll.

Common issues

  • An in-roll chart and a CCM serve different purposes. This step does not use the CCM card ID or APD target.
