Guide / Create a Trichrome CCM

Create a Trichrome CCM

Make a Trichrome CCM from three chart images captured with the same setup and lights as the film. Single-shot, Bayer three-shot, and Monochrome three-shot inputs use different profiles.

Before you start

Open a Trichrome project with the correct sensor type. Have three exposures of the same transmission chart under R, G, and B light, matching the camera, light intensities, and input settings used for film. This is not the chart photographed on the roll.

Steps

  1. Open New CCM Profile from the Trichrome project

Create a profile from the CCM selector and check Source / Input. It should identify 3 Bayer R/G/B Trichrome or 3 Mono R/G/B Trichrome, not Single Mosaic RAW. If it shows a single capture, verify the project first; selecting three files does not change a single-capture wizard into Trichrome. For Bayer RAW captures that need flat-field correction, enable a matching field before making the CCM. Correction applies to each original RAW, not as an extra pass on the composite. Monochrome captures do not support this Bayer flat-field correction.

  2. Choose the three chart images and check R, G, B labels

Monochrome uses Choose 3 Images…; Bayer uses Choose 3 Images (auto-sort)…. Wait for the preview and check each file’s R/G/B badge against the capture record. Bayer chart auto-ordering belongs to this wizard; it does not mean ordinary roll import corrects channel order automatically.

  3. Set Order manually if needed

Order describes the actual colors of the three files after filename sorting. Choose RGB for R, G, B, or BGR for B, G, R. Monochrome does not identify colors by brightness and needs a manual setting. If Bayer identification fails or has low confidence, also set the order from your capture records and check the R, G, B labels. Brightness depends on the film, light, and sensor, so it is not a reliable guide to order.

  4. Select the target and inspect patch placement

Enter the physical chart’s six-digit Card ID. Negatives normally use APD unless the downstream workflow requires Status M; reversal uses its dedicated calibration. These profile types are not interchangeable. Check TL/TR/BR/BL and every sample box inside its patch, away from text and borders. Auto Align locates the chart; it does not register the three source captures.

  5. Test, save, and apply

Click Test Fit and check the messages and MSE Before / After; see the CCM lesson for how to read them. Name the profile so you can identify its camera, sensor mode, and light settings, then click Save and Apply and wait. The profile type must match the project. A regular single-shot CCM is not suitable for three-shot input.

  6. Check several photographs and keep the chart records

Inspect several densities, colors, and edges rather than only reduced chart error. Without a profile, Monochrome remains device/filter RGB; No CCM does not assign a calibrated standard space. Unprofiled mono reversal may remain a technical preview. Recheck matching after changing camera, filters, light spectra/intensity recipe, or input interpretation. CCM cannot repair mismatched frames, registration, capture clipping, or severe flare.

Check the result

Check input type, chart order, card ID, target, and sample boxes. Apply the profile, wait for processing, then inspect several photographs. Keep the chart sources and capture settings for later recalibration.

Common issues

  • Cannot automatically identify chart order: set Order from your capture records, then check the R, G, B labels beside the files.
  • Cannot continue after selecting charts: check exactly three records, resolved roles, a six-digit ID, valid corners, and complete service/access errors. Three duplicate files are not a valid spectral reference.
  • Profile missing or unavailable: check single/Trichrome, Bayer/Monochrome, negative/reversal, and input compatibility. Do not edit profile files to bypass checks.
