Retain and render negative perforations
You can keep film borders and perforations in the finished image while excluding holes from negative analysis. This page covers identification and sampling.
Retaining perforations without analyzing them
Perforations transmit light directly, unlike image areas or film base, and can affect negative analysis. Exclude them with Calibration Area first, then use this tool to set their appearance in the finished image. Sampling temporarily opens a technical view; normal rendering returns when sampling ends.
Before you start
Set the negative Calibration Area first, leaving perforations outside the box. This tool is for negatives, not reversal film.
Steps
Inspect automatic identification
Expand Film Perforations. Perforations identified and Not sampled can coexist because identification and manual sampling are separate states.
Inspect automatic identificationSelect image to enlarge Sample manually when needed
Use the picker to enter the technical-linear transmittance view and sample inside an actual perforation. Its appearance differs from the finished rendering by design, not because the source was damaged. Enter confirms; Esc cancels.
Sample manually when neededSelect image to enlarge Finish sampling and check the result
After Enter, sampling should end and normal rendering return. Esc cancels a bad session; use Clear Samples to remove an already-confirmed bad sample before resampling. Toggle Illuminate perforations as needed and inspect borders/holes while checking the photograph itself was not biased. Use Apply to All only with matching capture conditions and inspect a target frame. Keep the intended holes in Crop while excluding them from Calibration Area.
Illuminate perforations off: the holes appear black after negative conversion. Switches every 2.8 seconds. The Contact Sheets are scrolled to different positions; find the road, park, and factory photographs shared by both and inspect their upper and lower holes. These are not pixel-aligned captures. The off image still shows Calibrating at the bottom; it illustrates the off appearance, not a completed analysis. In your project, wait for analysis to finish before judging photograph tone and color. Lighting the holes does not include them in the analysis area or repair a wrong selection. Pause, choose a state, or select an image to enlarge.
Check the result
Sampling has ended, perforations look as intended, and the photograph’s color and tone remain correct. Keep the desired holes in the crop but outside the analysis area.
Common issues
- If a sample falls on image content, cancel or clear/resample before propagating it across the roll.
