Guide / Correct lens distortion

Correct lens distortion

Use a lens profile or manual settings to correct distorted lines, then crop any empty edges left by the correction.

Before you start

Check whether the source has been cropped or already lens-corrected in another app. Do not apply the correction twice.

Steps

  1. Open the tool and check the lens profile

Open a photograph in the Viewer, choose Lens Geometry in its top toolbar, and use Lens Profile under Correction mode. Auto matched is a candidate, not validation. Check lens, focal length, sensor conditions, and declare uncorrected input only when that is known. Keep already-corrected sources Off to avoid duplicate distortion correction; prior cropping can invalidate a profile too.

  2. Find a lens profile or use manual correction

Use Auto match to retry or search the actual maker/lens model and verify the profile and capture parameters. Leave correction Off when no suitable profile exists. If Manual correction is justified, inspect a known straight frame edge or reference, not a naturally curved object in the photograph. Real close-focus checks matter more than a successful-match label.

  3. Apply to the roll

Not applied means the correction is not active. After checking conditions, click Apply to Entire Roll and recognize the roll-wide scope. Wait for the update before inspecting lines and edges. To disable it, click Turn off for entire roll. This also affects the whole roll, not just the current preview.

Lens geometry correction off. Flat-field correction remains on.

Switches every 2.8 seconds. Inspect the film border and known straight lines for curvature, and check the corners for empty edges. Brightness does not indicate distortion correction, and naturally curved objects should remain curved. Pause, choose a state manually, or select the image to enlarge.

  4. Crop empty edges

Geometry correction can change the usable edges. Use Crop empty edges when appropriate, then set composition in Crop. Inspect other frames rather than tuning the whole-roll correction only for one photograph.

Check the result

Check that straight lines look correct and inspect the edges of other frames from the roll. Crop empty edges if needed before finishing the composition.

Common issues

  • If distortion worsens, check for prior correction or cropped input; automatic matching does not waive those conditions.
